McCain: From Farm to Table Employing a Data-Driven Strategy to Double the Business

Good Food – Good People – Good Business

That’s the philosophy behind everything McCain does-all the French fries (and yes 1 out of every 3 fries in the world is a McCain fry), the side dishes and the desserts. With 46 production facilities around the world, McCain knew they needed one global process to ensure quality and efficiency. Considering that in addition to the 46 production facilities, McCain has 35,000 supplier/partners, 3200 growers and a transportation group that has 80 terminals across Canada with operations around the world, that meant data was everywhere in multiple systems. Those multiple systems needed to be consolidated.

“Single version of truth. That’s a bigger thing for us. We moved from 36 versions of ERP into one single version, same processes used across all McCain companies, having one instance. It’s a mandate. It’s also bringing discipline. Everybody in McCain is using the same processes from an order to cash or any business processes.” – Soma Muruganandam, Director for Enterprise Analytics, McCain

During the migration to a single instance of SAP, Teradata consulting services helped with the integration of SAP and non-SAP data into McCain’s existing enterprise data warehouse, allowing McCain to take full advantage of their investments.  The decision in selecting Teradata consulting services provided McCain with the required resources along with the necessary knowledge and expertise in utilizing their selected ETL tool of choice.  More importantly, they were able to complete the global integration project on time and within budget.

With 10 years of history – sales, financial, and forecasts – McCain now looks at their P&L every day with the ability to drill down and ask questions daily, “What changes do I make right now to get to the numbers and our goals?” That information used to take McCain four days obtain; now it’s daily! And that daily information with current P&L goes from the plant floor all the way to the C-suite – every day by 8:00AM.

“They are now clearly looking at that information. Are we going to make the month? This is what we budgeted for, and this is what our plan is, this is what our forecast is. I’m standing on the 15th of the month. Am I going to make the month? And what changes do I need to make from a sales perspective or the pricing perspective so I can make my numbers? So it gives them a heads-up. It’ll also tell them what’s going to happen in a way they can act on it. They can make actions immediately.” – Soma Muruganandam, Director for Enterprise Analytics, McCain

Sales, Marketing and the Integrated Data Warehouse

Marketing now has an insights team in their distributor’s office (yes that’s their customer) with the ability to get self-service reports from the integrated data warehouse.

“ We have a major distributor in North America, and I along with one of our marketing analysts from the marketing insights team use the Teradata EDW heavily, and we live and breathe it. They’re sitting in our distributor’s office and looking at the data and analyzing, exploring the data and providing the information back to the distributor to gain additional volume for the year. Bottom line, increasing the growth when contractually the distributor agreed to 80 million pounds of potatoes, so we get more volume which impacts our profit as well.” – Soma Muruganandam, Director for Enterprise Analytics, McCain

Screen Shot 2015-01-05 at 10.19.38 AMWith data that they can count on, McCain sales teams are able to look at customer forecasts. They see POS data from their customers (the biggest restaurant chains in the world) and gain insights that include how the customers are seeing McCain, if forecasts are up or down, and what are the actuals. McCain is able to forecast and do accounting based on what their customers are going to buy. Soon, McCain will bring their customer’s data into their solution for even more accurate insights.

“We drive the business based on the information. It’s not based on anything else. It’s based on the processes that produce data, and the data, we use to drive the business on a daily basis. We are a data-driven company.” – Soma Muruganandam, Director for Enterprise Analytics, McCain

Congratulations to McCain on a successful single instance ERP and integrated  enterprise data warehouse, no small task for such a global company!
