The Cloud Makes Disaster Recovery Easy

By Brian Wood, Director of Cloud Marketing

Teradata Cloud is a wonderful “on-ramp” to enterprise analytics for customers of all shapes and sizes. In bypassing large upfront investment and going straight to organizational insight, companies can focus on immediate value-add and skip the long line of colleagues queuing for budget approval and/or IT infrastructure provisioning.

Put simply, Teradata Cloud is a modern-day approach for folks with “today’s” analytic requirements but “needed it yesterday” tolerance for waiting.

Most of the attention for Teradata Cloud has been on what I’ll characterize as typical cloud benefits – low barrier to entry, rapid provisioning, easy scale-up, managed operations – and typical analytic use cases: production analytics, test and development, sandboxes, data mart consolidation, etc. This is all good stuff, if not necessarily newsworthy.

But here’s something that is newsworthy:  today we’re announcing a customer using Teradata Cloud for Disaster Recovery.

Core Digital Media, a leader in the online marketing and online consumer acquisition space and our on-premises customer since 2007, is deploying Teradata Cloud as a disaster recovery solution for its existing system. With guidance from Teradata Professional Services, Core Digital Media is extending its on-premises Teradata data management environment with Teradata’s Data Warehouse as a Service offering.

Using cloud services for disaster recovery and business continuity for an existing on-premises Teradata system is smart for two reasons. First, Teradata Cloud represents a geographically-diverse environment in the event of an interruption to the primary one. Second, a Teradata Cloud Passive DR system is significantly less expensive than a similarly-configured active Teradata Cloud system.

By being easier, faster, and more financially efficient, Teradata Cloud helps make DR an up-and-coming use case to complement on-premises environments.

It’s a use case that other forward-thinking companies like Core Digital Media will adopt.

I believe this is a leading indicator of the future of cloud.

It you want to get on with the business of enterprise analytics and ongoing availability, you can learn more about Teradata Cloud.
